Get 'er done!
I'm gonna make this real easy today.  I didn't offer any deals in last week's e-blast, so how bout I lay it on extra today.  T'eez will offer deals all week this week to make up.  I feel you boo.
Holidays are quickly apporaching.  I mean really quick.  I was watching TV on Halloween and saw a Christmas commercial.   No one is waiting around to get the holiday spirit going this year.  We won't either.  Pay attention in the salon as well for special holiday offers on gift cards and hair products.  Hair products are great gifts to give those people that have everything or those people that you really don't know what the hell they like, but you gotta get them something.  Nothing says, " Here, I don't really know you but please do something with your hair."  like hair product gifts.  Boom, done!
OK lets see what else,... oh ya, I wanted to make a simple observation about perception, reputation, catty talk and assumption.  I know a guy that gets a bad rap all the time.   I'm always heaing from people that they don't want him coming around,  or that once he comes it's gonna be a long time before things get back to normal, or how difficult he makes things and that he ruins all the fun once he comes.  Well, I'd like to point out that there is always another side to consider and I'm going lay it on you.   I and many others can't wait for him to come around.  We love what he does for us.  He does what no one else will or can do.  He helps make our lives so much more pleasant.  His name is Jack, Jack Frost.  Yes he may nip at your nose but for many of us he allows our noses to function clearly again.  He comes and puts seasonal allergies to rest and relieves us of their oppressive effects.  Welcome back Jack.  I can breath again!   If you're one of those that always talk smack about him then guess what?... You don't know Jack!

In a Flash
So much can happen in such a small amount of time, so it seems.  However, when looked at more closely or sometimes when you back up from it you see that most events come about after a long journey.
I'm thinking of two such significant events that occurred this week.  article II
First, we as a country, came together and acted as one.  I'm talking about all of us here in the United States.  Your United States of America acted as one in choosing and changing the leader of the greatest, richest and most powerful country in the world.  Regardless of who we voted for, and as the whole world watched, we acted as one, in a desperate time,  without a single shot being fired or drop of blood being shed, performed democracy.  This....this is our United States of America at it's very best.  It seemed to all happen in a flash of the moment last night around 11:00pm.  But we know it came from a long hard fought battle that came before it.  We know it came from lives lived in the pursuit of greatness, we know it came from great sacrifice and hardship of soldiers in the fields and civil rights activists on the streets, from POWs refusing to give in and slaves refusing to give up and from a notion over 200 years ago that we could govern ourselves in a perfect union for the people, by the people, and the hope of a young African American boy that actually believed what so many parents have told their children, that in America you can be anything you want to be when you grow up...even the President.

In another life changing event earlier this week, I received a phone call from a good friend informing me that someone very special to me had died.  A simple mistake that lead to a freak accident and she was gone,... in a flash.  Jo (Josephine) Warren of Omaha passed away in Arizona while visiting her daughter Jill.  It's a flash I would do most anything to take back.   The next flash is the one that goes through my mind.   I grew up with Jill and have known her and her mother Jo,  just about my whole life.  Jo was special woman to me and so much more than just my longest running client.  She became a, sort of surrogate mother to me.  This isn't just because of the length of time I knew her.  It was more because she could not help herself from ALWAYS telling me what to do and what she thought of what I did.  She didn't mince words and she didn't let me get away with anything without her weighing in.  This went beyond the normal instructions about hair services and into what I wore,  if I shaved or not and all things personal.  In regard to her focus on the salon, she became known as the new hire trainer at T'eez, because she would tell the new girls exactly how to shampoo her and how to apply color.   Her critiques on her cuts and styles were reserved for me.  I did my best.  She always kept coming back for more so I lived satisfied with work.  As hard on me as she might have been, like a mother, I knew she loved me and wanted nothing but the best for me.  Time to time she informed me when she had heard unsavory things said about me outside of the salon (I guess I'm oft the subject of public rumors, some earned, some not), and would then proceed to tell me what she said to in strident defense of me.  I often wondered if she was even in the conversation when she laid into the offender.  She would have acted in either case.  Bottom line, I'm a better person for having known and loved her.  T'eez is a better place having served her.  Tomorrow I will style her one last time.  I promise you I will still be nervous to get it just right.  I'll do my best Jo.
My condolences to my good friend Jill,  Jo's son Jeff, her  husband Jim and their families.
I will miss you dearly Jo.  tom down

Omaha Fashion Week...Farce or Legit?

I'm Thomas Sena, and I directed the fashion show for the Omaha Fashion Week (OFW). I'm also owner of T'eez - A Thomas Sena Salon here in Omaha and my staff did some of the hair and makeup for the show. Some of my staff and I also styled hair for one of the events leading up to OFW, bla bla bla. My point is, that I was involved and fully signed on. I've heard all the cracks about OFW and even laughed along with them. I have to believe at it's inception, the idea to call it Fashion Week and to put it on par with NY, Paris, London, Milan etc., was probably done somewhat tongue in cheek,...not head up ass. So why not call it Fashion Week? That is what it was. A week of fashion events. Nick Hudson, owner of Nomad and other businesses, along with his event coordinator, Rachel Richards and local designer and photographer, Dale Heise were largely responsible for planning and delivering this week of fashion to Omaha.
Was Omaha Fashion Week on par with NYC, London and the other biggies? Duh, of course not. Those "weeks" run shows all week long showing line after line from several designers from the well known to the new rising stars with ass loads of money at stake with buyers, editors and more celebs than you can shake... to death. More importantly they have traditions that makes these "weeks" what they are today. Ahahhhh, traditions. Remember that word.
Let's look at what OFW did have. We had fashion-oriented events all week long that were mostly well attended. The week ending in one big fashion show that, frankly was probably larger than any one of the shows at NYC week. 10 local designers showing their original lines totaling over 100 ensembles down the 100 ft. runway. More than 4 hair salons involved in the model prep, working together. What?!!! I can tell you that don't usually fly in Omaha. Best of all, the crowd turn out was truly impressive. Somewhere around the 2000 mark for those in attendance for the big runway show outside of Nomad. Most, if not all of this, a first for Omaha.
It’s so easy to look at this and laugh and pass it off as a farce. A mockery of the real fashion weeks in real cities. Oh snap!!! Well that's usually the tone or underlying message I hear from the naysaying hecklers. A great deal of people that live here, natives and transplants alike, have made an effin sport of laughing at... themselves. God forbid we have something to offer the likes of NYC or LA. Hey, too cool for O!, go tell Saddle Creek Records what a joke Omaha is.., snap, crackle and pop baby!!!
When I was in New York a few years ago I discovered that Omaha was a way more hip and respected place than it was here. Just last year I was talking to a musician in Martha's Vineyard of all places when I dropped the O bomb, I had instant cred (thanks Conor). How bout that shizz? Why is Paypal, Google and soon to be Yahoo here in Omaha? WTF??? Get over it, we got some shit here. Think about it. We have a lot of untapped or undiscovered talent here because of all that cynicism. That also means we can become a phenomenon and take the country by surprise. I've had to answer the question my whole professional life, "Man, why are you in Omaha?" My mission is clear here. I'd rather create in uncharted waters than join the masses. Ya, ya speaking of water, we do need a damn lake here, for the love of God! Please flood Ashland! Make it look like an accident, I don't care just do it!!! Sorry, I digress.
Bottom line: OFW was a great start and a quantifiable success. It was good for Omaha....really good. From the great turn out, you can expect to see it again. A few more years of these and who knows, maybe we’ll have started our own fashion week tradition.

Thanksgiving = give thanks

I know it seems so obvious to point out the intent of Thanksgiving but I feel like its truly the best reason for a holiday.  Let's not dwell on the inconsistencies of the story of the pilgrims and "Indians" except for the possibility that for at least one day there might have been a coming together of two vastly different peoples, cultures, ideologies and beliefs to put down all that stuff and said, "hey lets eat and get our crunk on."  I'm paraphrasing.
The words I'm more drawn to are of Abraham Lincoln.  In Oct of 1863 amidst the Civil War he proclaimed the national holiday as many presidents before him did but Lincoln added this to the proclaimation....
"I recommend ... that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union."
I hope these words ring as loud now with you in our national crisis of today as I hear them.  There are many at war and out of work with so many more to come, with foreclosures, and bankruptcies at an all time high and getting worse.  May this Thanksgiving mean a little more to all of us and to not forget those less fortunate.
I give thanks with my whole heart to every single one of you for being our friends and clients.

How's it going?
I really mean that.  How's the economic crisis affecting you?  Are you tired of hearing about it?  I've been thinking (I know, weird, right?).  All,... and I mean all the talking heads and egg heads on TV and in print are now telling us to "gird our loins" and prepare for the worst.  They say its not even close to as bad as it's going to be and that it will last longer than we think.
      OK, here's what your silly corner beauty shop operator thinks;
For starters, I think they are wrong.  These are the same geeks that didn't know the crash was coming or why it would.  I'll also bet good money they were the ones saying gas would be $5 to $10 before the end of the year.  Remember that???  How much are you paying for a tank now compared with when they were assuring us that BS?  Now, if we asked them why they were wrong, they'd have an answer for you... and it would sound like white noise and clicking sounds.  But how can they be so wrong about things that big and important, time after time?  I'm talking about some really smart people.  A lot smarter than ...well, me.
The element they don't ever figure in is "us."  The collective "us."  That's me and you and everyone.  Sometimes we act like sheep, but among us there are always lone wolves.  We are as unpredictable as the weather.
The financial woes are not exclusive to America.  They are world wide.  Which means the money just disappeared.  It didn't go in somebody else's pocket.  This is all about value and perception, confidence and hope.
This is up to "us."  No formula or equation can account for what we all do.  When we are truly tired of it and decide we want it to end,...it will end, just as surely as it started.   Am I over simplifying this huge mess?  Absolutely.  If you're anything like me, "simple" works better.
So how do we turn it around?  To over simplify again, I think it starts with hope.  We have to believe we can to do it and that "they" don't have all the answers.  Don't accept that this down-turn  will last years or even a full year.
Change is a good ignitor of hope.  Let's all change something that will cause a positive ripple.
Put on your party dress and your best shirt and get to the salon and get your hair colored and cut and styled.  Dress and look the part.  Go out and party and shop.  I'm not talking about blowing money.  Be smart and bargain shop and look for specials.  Reward those that reach out to you.  You can make a difference.
For our part at T'eez, I commit to offering you weekly specials for starters.  I am also working on something more bold, broad and sweeping for our positive change... you know, lone wolf kind of stuff.  More on that later.
For now, look for these offers and please forward them to friends and family or better yet to that woman or guy that REALLY needs a change.  There is an easy forward link at the bottom of each email.
This is America,  we can screw some serious sh!# up in the world, but you know when we get together we can do amazing things.  I feel the same about Omaha... the amazing part.  Hey how bout that pedestrian bridge?  huh?  Yes! ; )

Spontaneous Sam Meis!
A few weeks ago we decided to host "Lady's Night" at the Sioux City Country Club. We thought this would be a great way to get the buzz out about our new product line! What was supposed to be hair styling (so everyone could get one)...ended up being makeover sessions with hair cuts!

One young lady who decided to pop in on the fun was the beautiful Sam Meis. She said she was ready for a change from her long hair...quoted "I've had this hair cut my whole life, I think" and Thomas Sena of T'eez Salon said "then I'm ready for you!" and that is when the fun began!! She wanted to keep some length because senior prom was right around the corner and she already had her hair 'do picked out. So Tom decided she would look great with more bangs and the Heidi Klum look.

Below are Sam's before and after pictures. With a little help from the T'eez product line - products used: Build Me, Bounce Me and Do Me- and Thomas Sena, Sam had a whole new look and was LOVING every minute of it!! Just look at her, how could she not?!? Want to try something new yourself?...Thomas Sena would love to get his scissors out and work on you! He is located in Omaha, NE at T'eez Salon 1120 S. 105th St.

We now present to you...T'eez Hair Products!!
Hold Me - Coming soon - This is an aerosol working and finishing spray. It has an innovative water free formula. The idea is that it goes on light and dry with as much hold as you want. The more you spray the more it holds. It actually helps speed up drying your hair if used while blow-drying. Key feature: use after applying styling products like Bounce Me and Do Me and it helps freeze dry your style. Hold Me is so dry, it helps dry excess moisture from today's styling products to give you a great hold all day without being overly sticky.

Text Me - Texture styling cream (it’s more like a thick paste). It is a very thick and tacky product for shorter hair with a dry matte creating a chunky finish. Ideal for men and women with shorter cuts. You have to know how to put this in or you won’t like it. A dab on the finger tip and then spread it out hard and evenly on palms. The added bonus is the minty tingle for people that have thinning or balding hair to help stimulate blood flow to the scalp.
Bounce Me - Styling cream used before blowout. This is a unique cream that gives added volume and body but controls frizzy ends. You can use it to control wave or curl for straightening or use it to scrunch up natural waves or curl. Weird! It’s best used to blow with for body baby!

Build Me - This is the miracle styling spray, no kidding. I used every good idea from every good styling spray and managed to capture it all in one bottle. It is an invisible styling spray to be sprayed especially at the roots for volume without any weight or stickiness and virtually no hold. Great to boost fine or limp hair. It is the first thing in after you towel dry hair. Layer it with Bounce Me styling cream for amazing body and volume, without frizziness. This is the perfect combo on most women's hair. The scent is amazing. People can't get enough. Is it cucumber water and a hint of watermelon? Big seller.

Do Me- Finishing separating cream. After blowing and styling, spread a small amount of this cream on your hands and then run your fingers through your hair for that perfect amount of separation and shine. Helps control static and flyaway’s as well without weighing you down or making you feel greasy.

Drench It - Our leading shampoo. It is moisturizing for normal to chemically challenged hair. It is rich but light weight. Good for the whole family and works as a body wash as well. Smells yummy.

Strip It- This is our volumizing shampoo. It works by gently stripping off product and environmental build up instead of chemically blowing up your hair cuticles like other volumizing shampoos. This is the shampoo for people that don't like to feel products in their hair and those in need of an extra boost for their lifeless locks. The citrus scent is amazing and will leave you saying, "It’s not just for breakfast anymore."

Soothe It - Our top conditioner. This is a regular use conditioner for every time you shampoo. Great paired with Drench it. It is a rich moisturizing conditioner. I'm a firm believer in controlling the amount of conditioning you want in your hair with the amount you rinse out. If you want max conditioning you can rinse quick and leave some in your hair. Smells like the tropics and sunny beaches.

Rinse It - This is our lightest conditioner. The bottle says it all. It’s a throw back to the old school cream rinse. It just normalizes the hair after shampooing. Very light conditioning and great for people that don't like using a conditioner because they are afraid of weighing down their hair. It’s almost invisible but helps chill out the cuticle.
Heal It - For the chemically challenged or environmentally tortured hair. Help is on the way and it’s called Heal It. This is not necessarily for daily use. Use as needed to repair and revitalize. Here's a secret that I discovered when I was testing it at home. I ran out of styling cream and I used Heal It in my hair and left it in. It made my hair so soft, rich and smooth. Too rich and smooth for me but I started experimenting on clients (unbeknownst to them). I also had my stylists play with it on highly textured or frizzy hair. You can leave this stuff in for smoothing out that crazy hair. For the rest of us it’s a great deep conditioner used as needed.

TEXT ME

They say texting is the wave of the future. Okay, fine, so I'm exaggerating a bit perhaps. They say technology is the wave of the future, but in all fairness, texting is a major part of that technology. Well at least a major part of cell phone technology, which in its own right is a pretty big deal. Maybe now would be the time to get to my point.

There's nothing that screams "hey eighties!" or "nice acid washed jeans Zach Morris!" or just "ew" more than crunchy hair. Add to that delicious crunch the "wet look" and you're solid gold. A Solid Gold dancer that is, you just need your leotard. My point? Ditch it. Quick.

I see way too many guys (and no, girls, you're not off the hook here) with spiked up, or wavy, or I-can't even-find-words-sick-enough-to-describe-it hair like I just described. Your LA Look Gel just isn't cutting it any more, capiche?

Lucky you! T'eez has just introduced your saving grace...in an adorable little jar!

Welcome to the digital age. Edgy urban style is a flick of the wrist away with this wax/cream hybrid that'll leave your hair textured, not wet, and have your strands screaming "Text me!"

So, pretty much, you have no excuse (unless you're under the age of 12 and still experimenting, in costume or drag, do everything in your power to refute the norm, or just what looks good, in which case you're not very original at all, just like, emo or something, or can come up with another excuse that will work with me...)

Top 5 celeb meltdowns of 2007

Face it…none of us can resist the allure of watching a celeb trainwreck in action…it’s addictive (almost more so than those little eggnog cocktails we’ll all soon be sipping!) Here’s our list of the best (or shall we say worst!) celebrity meltdowns of 2007.

5. Owen Wilson- After being hospitalized in August, reports of an attempted suicide surfaced post-Kate Hudson split. We hope Owen’s heart and mind are healed up soon…we need him to make us laugh after all that “family time” this holiday season!

4. David Hasselhoff-It’s bad enough when you mix sloppy burgers with intoxication, but the ‘Hoff takes it to the next level in his infinitely popular YouTube video meltdown taken by his poor daughter who somehow witnessed the whole thing without vomiting. This little treasure brought to light the secret the “Bay Watch” alum and popular (in OTHER countries) singer had been hiding for far too long.

3. Paris Hilton- We can only imagine Paris’ mighty list of New Year’s resolutions for 2008…maybe actually going on her relief work trip she mysteriously cancelled? Finishing her memoir recalling her (too?) brief stint in the big house? Making a sequel to “One Night in Paris?” Okay, we admit it, we crossed the line.

2. Lindsey Lohan-Time for a Bridget Jones-esque year-in-review summary. Number of DUI’s: 2. Number of stints in rehab: 2. Number of pantyless crotch-shots, nipple-slips and irreversible damage to reputation: We lost count ages ago. Freshly out of rehab, we hope LiLo gets her life back on track pronto. And while we’re at it, we wish the same for her mom, dad and little sister (who needs all the help she can get at this point!)

1. Britney Spears- I’m sure this comes as little surprise to you, from her highly publicized custody battle to her shiny cue-ball make-under, the still-reigning queen of pop (that’s right, her songs are STILL topping the charts!) is still trying to come back from her MTV “comeback.” Will she get her act together in 2008 or will she take after her song “Oops! I Did it Again?”

The Fuss About Specialization

Finally, it's here! Omaha actually has a specialized salon, so why aren't YOU celebrating? What's that? You don't even know what specialization is, what it means to be specialized? Well that just won't do! How can you have the most amazing hair in Omaha (not that you can really compete with me) when you don't even have a clue about how cool the concept of specialization is and how great it will be for your mane?

Let me break it down for you. The idea for T'eez Specialization is based on the idea of going with one's strengths. We are very excited to be the first salon in Omaha to be fully specialized for many reasons. We feel that this is the next step in our evolution to give our valued clients the best of what we have to offer. The idea of going with the individual strengths of each stylist is based on the Gallup Organization’s Strengthsfinder and book, Now, Discover Your Strengths.

We feel the best thing we can do is encourage focusing on the area in which the stylist naturally excels. According to Strengthsfinder…

When you see a strength in action, you see a person’s ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance in a specific activity. When you see him or her perform that activity, you think, ‘She makes it look so easy!’ or ‘He’s a natural!’

How can that be? How can they so consistently perform with such excellence? The answer is simple: It is easy for her. He is a natural.

Each is performing at such a high level simply by building upon how he or she most naturally thinks, feels and behaves: their greatest talents.”

If YOU had the choice of having two EXPERTS work on your hair vs. one person that could do both pretty well, what would you pick? Would you rather have a general physician work on your rare heart condition, or a heart specialist? Hey, this may be life or death, but it is your hair, which you wear every day, and that is a pretty big deal. So pop the cork on the bubbly baby, and shout it from the mountaintops! Specialization has arrived, and along with it the wave of the future in what Omaha and T'eez Salon has to offer for hair!

The sexy bob

No it’s not the follow up to rap hit and dance move "Soulja Boy." Nor is it your aunt’s nickname for your Uncle Robert. It’s a sensation that’s sweeping the nation as seen on: Katie Holmes, Nicole Richie, Victoria "Posh" Beckham, Sienna Miller, and most lately (and importantly) me.

Let them say what they will, this short little number is HOT, despite what your boyfriend (or girlfriend, hey, I don’t know you) may say otherwise. Besides framing the face just so, this can do wonders for your bone structure, make you look sexy and sophisticated with a flick of the shears, and give you the volume you’ve only dreamt about in your most racy of late-night R.E.M. sessions.

I know, because I’ve been there. I’ve been where you are, in the "but it took me forever to grow it out" mode, the "but I can’t live without my ponytail!" mode. You WILL get over it.

Imagine blow-drying your hair without the dread of massive styling time. Imagine, texture and an actual cut that is a style in and of itself. Imagine waking up next to David Beckham, wait…okay I can’t promise that part.

If you’re bored with your hair, if it has never once danced along your jaw line or even dipped above your shoulders, you need this. Seriously, if you have to justify it, give it up to locks of love. Tell yourself you will technically be losing weight. Cut off the bad in your life and have a fresh start (hey…maybe THAT’S what Brit was doing!)

I never thought I’d be "that girl" but here I am. Advocating a national chop off. Do it! Be brave! Don’t hide behind your hair like I did for so many years! Once you do, I guarantee you will feel so free (if not, there’s always extensions, right? Worry not! You’ll love it!)

You get more than you give

Who is T'eez?
You are T'eez
In this space we have been spotlighting one of our staff each week to let you know a little about who makes up who we are. This week, it is particularly timely to not only say thank you to you, our clients, for making up a big part of who T'eez is, but also to share with you something very special you helped us with.
Shortly after the New Year we had the pleasure and honor to deliver all the goods you helped us accumulate to give to a family in need here in Omaha.
They are a Father and Mother with 8 kids from Burundi Africa. I can tell you the meager house we pulled up to was in a depressed area of town in the fading light and perceived protection of the day. We had three vehicles stuffed full of your generous donations. On entering the clean little house we were greeted by the Mother, as the Father was gone at work. On each trip from the cars to the house we would discover another little face peering out the windows with obvious wonderment. As we continued more children appeared and soon were running out into the snow with bare feet to help us carry goods in. We finally finished loading the haul into the house and started aiding the children as they tore into the bags and boxes. One young boy said he wished for pants and then found a pair amongst the gifts and he disappeared to try them on. The Mother would often have to be told what particular kitchen items were used for. She would then smile and laugh at her questions. Their appreciation and more than anything their smiles were our gift and once again our honor to have been able to provide and accept for you. A heartfelt thank you to all that donated t
o our effort. A Merry Christmas indeed.

A dream realized

Today is the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday. I would say this year is the most special birthday of Dr. King. How fitting it is that today is the day before Barack Obama's inauguration. There is certainly plenty of work to be done with civil rights and inequality in America, but with Barack Obama becoming president, the ceiling has been shattered. I beg you, please don't reduce this to politics or you will miss out on this extrordinary event. This must be the greatest present Dr. King could have hoped for. It feels like the world has an appreciation for this historic moment. It also seems to be about more than just that Mr. Obama will be the first African American President. We stand at a precipice of a world wide economic, ecological and geopolitical crisis. If there was ever a moment of a collective holding of breath it is now. The stakes are high. In fact, they are too huge to fall on any one man and yet there it is. The man that is heir apparent to Dr. Kings dream has already managed to embody more of the worlds hope than any other person in recent history. "Hope," more than any other single thing is what will deliver us from the most challenging time this country has seen in our lifetime. From outside America:

I have an intense impression that a fresh wind will drift into the Washingtom air upon his arrival....
-by Vaclav Havel, Playwright and former President of Czech Republic

Climate change and its global effects have to be as important for the U.S. and the world as anything else I can think of. The impact of the growing human population, in terms of resources and equity, on global underdevelopment, diseases and the shortages of water (and energy) are frankly terrigying. Solutions will require inspired leadership. We all require a President who will remain calm, focuses and hopeful. Well done, America; your democracy has delivered.
-by Richard Leakey Conservationist Kenya

once again the majorityy of the world's population will whisper, "Only in America" could this happen.
by Kishore Mahbubani Professor, National University of Singapore

Dr. King, your "someday" is here, when African Americans can finally join hands with every American, and every American can join hands across many borders and oceans and shout your words in a world wide chorus that on Jan 20th 2009, we are
"Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

Happy Birthday Dr. King
Godspeed President Obama

Time March...or March time
I can't believe its already March.  especially with all this white stuff outside.  Admittedly, I love snow,.. I mean if it's gonna be cold what the hell, let it snow.  I'm just can't get my head around the fact that time is flying faster and faster.  You'd think with all the doom and gloom slowing so many things that time would also slow down, but not so.  Time is more than marching.  It's at the "quick step."  I've seen this in some military exercise somewhere... looks funny, trust me.  I guess the good news is that we will be past all of this downturn stuff soon enough.  We need to back our noses out of the papers, news media and stock reports just far enough to take a breath and look around.  Life is still going on and time is still flying.  I haven't seen any bread lines yet.  I don't make light of sad and frustrating situations caused by this economy.  I just know it will be history soon enough.  Onward, soldier!  Are you picking up a theme here?
So how is it going to look once this battle is over?  I want to be standing when it's over.  In fact, I want to be more than just standing...yep, I want to be doing that goofy looking "quick step."  I'm thinking maybe the Pakistan version  click for vid . (no offense)
Finally, a word about these eblasts and a piece of feedback.  I usually get some feedback from these things, which I love.  Honestly, I do, positive or not.  But every once in a while I get some nut-job which is particularly fun for us at the salon.  Those are usually the ones that get printed and read or posted in the salon.  Oh, come on, you know you'd do the same thing.  I take responses and requests seriously but these are the ones that fit into the kooky category.  OK, I'll share.  he he.  I got one recently that scolded me for "raping the economy" because they couldn't get in during a discount offer.  All I could think of was some twisted scene with me and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke.  Yikes, don't worry, no video link here.  Anyway I hope you find these eblasts fun and hopefully rewarding if you are able to use the discounts at the bottom.  If not then send me some crazy emails.  :)

Summer

The very sound of that word sets off a flurry of synapsis firing in my head like Pavlov's bell, stirring memories and anticipation.   Memorial Day is the unofficial start of Summer.
When I was a kid, it seemed my whole life revolved around summer.  Missing it, waiting for it, living it and then trying to hold on to it with every last ounce of strength before succumbing to the  chill of autumn.
My memories haven't faded as much as what society allows anymore.  When that last school bell rang in May or June, I hit the streets not to be seen again till September.  I ran shoeless and shirtless with my Jackson St. crew 1.  No longer did it matter what school they went to.  Now the lines were drawn from suburban subdivisions giving rise to turf wars, enemy and allied territories, visiting dignitaries and reconnaissance missions into the unknown.  Battles were waged often in massive games of "kick the can" or "save the flag".  Daily exercises of "kill the man with the ball" and "catch a ball on the fly 2" kept us in top form.  We practically ran the local pool, perfecting our dives for the girls perfecting their tans.  How can we go faster and fly farther down the street this summer?  Who broke what bone 3?  Who's the new girl 4?  Who moved out?  Who got drunk for the first time?  How sharp can you get this?  Will this fly?  Who ratted who out?  Who sneaked out?  Who's Dad died 5?  Who got busted?  Where's the new stash 6?  How long can you keep your gas soaked hand on fire 7?  How big of an explosion will this make 8?  Who kissed who?  These were the questions of my endless summers as a kid.  We never had to ask a parent, "Can ____ play today?"   It was summer and we could always play.

I filled my little pool yesterday as my act of kicking off Summer. The kids were excited to see it come back to life after seeing it all winter in an ugly frozen heap on my patio.   I was happy the vinyl held without any holes.  I love watching the kids play outside with friends.  I do my best to give them a carefree summer like I had but times have changed.  I have to keep a sharper eye than my parents did.  I admit to fighting off a smile when I catch my boy building a dangerous contraption or vehicle with my tools he's not supposed to use without asking or putting firecrackers in something he's not supposed to blow up.  Oh it's just beginning but I know what he's up to.  He is forever cursed with a Father that shouldn't be alive today from all I did or tried.  But I respect my kid's summer.  School is out, Let them play.

"Then followed that beautiful season... Summer....
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape
Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood."
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Father's Day and Claire's Day

This year Father's Day falls on the same weekend of my daughter's birthday.  I can't think of a better way to celebrate Father's Day.  Claire is my baby girl.  We will have a party for her, actually a couple parties as it turns out.  We've invited friends and family and will have cake and ice cream, break the pinata and give presents.  All the usual birthday traditions.  I've loved her as many Father's love their little girls, ... with complete abandon and unashamed adoration.  She is ..... ok how can I say this.... she is ... more beautiful than your daughters.  There, I've said it.  I'm sorry but that is better than the best superlative I can think of, if you feel the same way about your daughters, which I'm sure you do.  As unique as it feels, I know most parents know what I'm talking about.  connexions
But this year as she is about to turn 8, I've started thinking about this kind of love.  I don't want to say it's easy, because there are times this love can be so scary, painful and helpless with every tear she sheds or even worse those tears I've seen her stifle or hide.  But this love is easy, in the way that I didn't and don't have to do anything to feel it.  This intense love was born with each of my kids.  It was a package deal that came with them and didn't exist in me before they arrived.  I don't have to work to keep it fresh and have no fear of it fading or cooling in anyway.  But she is getting older and this adoring light can also be a little blinding.  I am beginning to see there is a girl here and not just my baby girl.  Dare I say, a young woman?  Ew, no I won't say that!  As hard as it is to think in these terms, it's a reality.  I've just begun to see who she is.  I watch her with her friends.  I confess standing just outside her door listening to her conversations between her Polly Pockets and stuffed animals.   Her talks with me are growing up as well.  I hear clues of talks I know are coming.  I can only hope she keeps talking with me, even if it's hard to hear what she might have to say.  I don't want to ever disappoint her but know I have and will.  She makes me work harder to be better then I ever would have.  Her choices will be many and reflective of who I am.  This is pressure.  One of my brothers has 3 boys and once told another brother that just had a baby girl, "I only have to watch out for 3 boys, you're gonna have to watch out for all the rest."  I cleaned that up but the meaning is basically the same.
It's difficult to imagine that our own parents know all these feelings.  Maybe our parents showed love differently but the feelings were there.
My Dad showed his love pretty openly for a man back in that day.  He still does.  He is proud Father.  He is a hairstylist and owned salons when I was growing up.  One of my sisters and I followed in that same career.  I can tell you he's equally proud of all 6 of us, however, I tell them I know he is most proud of me,.. duh.
He came from a poor migrant Mexican family with solid values,  integrity and a lot of love.  He then worked his way up to be a business owner that raised 6 kids in a moderately affluent west Omaha neighborhood.  He instilled in me much of who I am including music, creativity, style and to never give up on a dream.  He is a flawed hero with vises that have been passed down with the rest of him and has had at least as many "downs" as he has "ups."   This isn't fiction folks.  This is my Dad.dad me
I was recently reading a book called "Wisdom of our Fathers" by Tim Russert that has become particularly poignant since the author's untimely death not long ago.  Great book for Father's Day by the way.  He ends by writing about those key things his Dad used to always say that became identifiable with him.  All Dad's have these words and phrases that are linked with them, if only by their kids.  I wonder what mine will be.   This may be more for my siblings but here are some of my Dad's that I can so easily hear in his voice:

~ "Who's the fattest, in the land..."
~ "yahanedindeen don booty!"  (no translation)
~ "Now you're mad"
~ "The green weenie"
~ "The big hairy"
~ "Be a gentleman to all women"
~ "Dance with the tall women"
~ "That guy did _____ till who laid a chunk" (meaning a long time)
~ "Chato!"  (this meant to SHUT UP)

Finally, this next one he said only once to me when I was very young but it was perhaps the most influential thing he's ever said to me and I'll never forget it.  A horrible woman that moved in next door had called my Dad and told him I called her a B!#@%.  When he found me he asked if it was true.  He was mad and I knew under any circumstance I would get the belt for calling a woman this.  I was wrong.  I admitted it was true but before the belt came off I shamefully informed him it was because she yelled at me that we were "dirty Mexicans."  This was my first exposure to anything like this.  My Dad stopped dead in his tracks and without missing a beat said,
~ "If someone barks like a dog at you, don't get down on your hands and knees and bark back."
I didn't get the belt that day.
That's my Dad

Happy Father's Day and Happy Birthday my... young woman.

Let is snow

Oh, the weather outside is frightful.  But the savings inside are delightful!  Hey, how's that for a cliche commercial?  Yes, it's easy to become jaded or cynical from so much of what the holidays have become.  I won't be the exception here either.  I will offer you holiday deals for gifts such as gift cards or added bonuses and styles to help you look your best for all the parties and get togethers.  I would love to see you all in here before the the New Year but that's not what I want to chat with you about.  Nope. Ok, maybe a little but there I just did.  There's more at the bottom about all those offers.
I'd like to address this issue of holiday cynicism.  I've felt it.  I know it's hypocritical to suddenly get all generous with seasonal philanthropy.  But I don't think people in need will mind that you might just be clearing your conscience or taking a year end tax write off.  They just know they probably won't get it any other time of year, so they'll take it.  Or maybe your generosity will help give their kids some hope that not everything in the world is so bleak.  If this spirit only exists this time of year, so be it, better this than not at all.
Not only can we give donations but I'm talking about all the little extras in between.  How bout a smile?  How bout throwing out a little, "Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukah," now and then?  Why not makeout instead of just a peck under the mistletoe?  Go sledding.  Embarrass yourself.  Make your kids give away one present and then reward them with a ridiculously huge cookie.  Have some soup, go ahead.  Here's an idea, don't be an ass when you're driving.  How bout the next time I hear someone complaining about Christmas music, I'm gonna beat them about the head and neck with a yule log.  There's a lot we can do.  Or you can reject the whole notion and comfortably do nothing.  Good luck with that.
It's been tough out there for a lot more people this year than before.  Maybe we can all dig a little deeper or try a little harder.
Me, I'm going shopping for yule logs.  Happy Holidays and may your new year be filled with happiness.
